This OOAK Half Buckle with Wing straps has been made in honour of Avery, and his beautiful mother Kristie. Kristie designed this colourway (made by Girasol), and Tinoki had them made. Brie from Tinoki donated the wrap, and I my time to create this special carrier. All proceeds are going to Heartfelt.

Kristie shares some words with us -

Avery Fox Charles Tatton was born July 14 2011, silently and still. In the immediate aftermath of his death, Heartfelt were called to take photos of the family so we would forever have memories of his brief time with us. These have proven to be the most special and treasured pieces in our family.

This photo is such a blessing to this mama's heart

The Avery Wrap by Girasol was designed in Avery's memory by me in the short time after his death. One of the things I longed so much to do was carry him close in a woven wrap and kiss the top of his head.

I hope you will love to carry your babe in this Avery thanks to Beetlebums and <<Tinoki>>.

She made an awesome point - 'Babywearing is safe however not all baby carriers are'. How very apt that statement is.

This is Amaali, a big kid sized full buckle Summer Beetlebum that I made for my archnemesis (:P), Laura. Her daughter does NOT sleep... So I hope that Amaali soothes her off to sleep faster than ever!

Ive still got a couple of carriers to get out before Christmas, and with Kanga Collective up and running, I am a super busy mama! I am a bit behind on emails, I promise I haven't forgotten you if you have emailed me :).

I will be listing some chest straps this week too, Ive seen that there is quite a demand for them. They are adjustable and can be used on any carrier.

It is real - Australia and New Zealand now has their own Baby Wearing forum. I know I said Aus/NZ however it is really for all walks of life. Anyone who appreciates the practice of babywearing. Anyone who loves holding their baby close. Anyone who is close to having a baby, who wants to know more about this amazing parenting tool.

Kanga Collective has been a collaborative effort between quite a few people who all feel the same way. It has been, and will continue to be, alot of work. Such fun and fulfilling work it is. I am popping at the sides!

This is Moby - a Restyle I made especially for a wonderful woman and her partner. The wraps I used were Naglitki (Vatanai) and Storchenweige Leo Marine. They were well loved and super broken in wraps when they got here, I just know that this restyle is going to feel superb when worn.

Moby has extra long straps - the couple that own him love to tandem wear (wear two babies at once) and the Restyle Wing Straps are perfect for that.

The headrest is super special, if I might say so myself! The smiling whale makes me feel so happy when I look at him - and the meandering hand driven stitching signify water (I love how the variegated thread looks!).

I hope hope hope they LOVE Moby. And if they dont, I will buy him off them - because I do!

I have a new personal carrier.

Those who know me on the Australian Babywearing groups will now that I LOVE Firefish, but I haven't been wearing it as a wrap. I tried in vain to list it for sale not once, not twice but three times - every time I chickened out.

I just couldn't let go!!! So, I have my own sashimi!

As always, there is a story.. Amelie is a Restyle that I made, in company of Kathy! She witnessed the inception and delivery of her OWN Restyle! It was so nice to have company while sewing, I usually am all alone in my parlour.

This Restyle is made from Geckos Mauvein by Didymos. It was a size 5 - but we managed very well, and combined the wrap with black Bamboo Denim (I am hoarding the very little I have left - only for the special special peeps!)

LOOK!!! A gecko coming out of the Wing strap!!! What a nice surprise!

The hood was a labour of love - the geckos represent Yin and Yang. All completely hand driven - the gecko that I stitched out took quite some time (those lil fingers whoa did they ever drive me crazy!!!)

I'm not sure if you remember, but a little while ago myself and a friend (Kathy - who, incidently, is so freaking awesome!) decided to plant a seed. We decided to auction a special carrier for a very special lady (Renae) who is on her own personal journey - she is a weaver. And she needed a loom.

So Kathy and I knew what to do. And this is the result! Dream Weaver - a very special carrier, for a special lady (whom I made the carrier for) and for a very special cause. The loom is in action already, and I just cannot wait to see what Renae creates with it.

Dream Weaver has Wing Straps (made extra long for tandem wearing) with fringe on the ends <3. The headrest is appliquéd and features hand driven stitching. The lil fairy is very special to the mama I made it for - she may pipe up about it when she is ready. The fiery sun is rising - or setting. In any case, it is welcoming a new energy.

WOW!!!! My friend S, who has just opened a fantastic new store (Finely Woven), sent me this fabric - and guess what it was in a past life?

You wont guess....

A completely rocking skirt!! Now S is quite slim - so slim that I was lucky to be able to match the prints the way I did - there was very little fabric!!!

It is a Wing Restyle - with a petite waist. Leo Red was the wrap of choice, and it matches beautifully. Look at Encantas Wings!!

And the name?? Encanta - my favourite album of all time is Isla de Encanta. It makes me feel red energy, creative, fire - wild. Somehow this feeling is evoked when I look at this carrier - and well, S just happens to be one of my fave gals so it is fitting that her carrier is named after my favourite album. Whether she likes the Pixies or not :P

Hiya!

Just a quick update on ... me :P.

I have been very sick for a long time and am feeling now better than I ever have (YAY!). In the process of healing I have had to make some very big decisions for myself personally, and for my business, Beetlebums. Time will reveal all but just for now I can share that I have sought the help of an awesome woman to manage all correspondence (first stage) and in the coming weeks (when we sync our computers, whatever that is) she will be taking over. This means a few things - there will be no Beetlebums business done through FaceBook. I know I am guilty of using it to transact too but it really messes me around and I need things to be N-E-A-T right now :). So, unfortunately I have tightened my privacy settings again and cant answer anything Beetlebums related on FB via PM. Of course still use the page and chat - I will continue posting there too, but I want to get back to using FB for what it is good for - marketing and socialising, NOT conducting my business.

My new team members name is Beetlejuice and she rocks!! She jokes and says 'don't say my name three times' :P. She is a valued member of my team (that was once just me!), so please respect her and treat her as you would me. The best place to contact us is via the 'contact' tab on my website as my Yahoo email is being shut down, and any correspondence through that mailbox will cease soon.

There will have to be an end to 'favours' via email. I know I know I am guilty of this too but I have to be STRONG!! The time has come!!

The mailing list is broken, we will start a new one in the new year.

I will keep you all posted on the changes of course, and in the next month they will be happening.

Just a quick blogpost tonight - it is raging and storming outside, and I love moody weather!

This Restyle is made with Pazzi Pesci, a wrap made by Didymos. It features Wing Straps and tuckable hood. I just love how it shimmers - it's really gorgeous!

I tried to pack as many of those crazy fish onto the headrest as I could :)

The fish are swimming waaaaay down south tomorrow, to their new family. I hope they are loved!!

The Lotus - there are many meanings. One is to be still and seated.

Situ is going to a wonderful family - she is a Beetlebum Wrap Restyle with Wing Straps and tuckable hood. The appliqué was hand drawn and applied with hand driven stitching meandering across the headrest.

The wrap that I restyled is a Girasol Northern Lights. Its so gorgeous, the colours are so deep and rich.

I really hope Situ is loved in her new family - I loved making her for them!!!

Well, there was a bit of banter on one of the groups I frequent not so long ago about sashimi-ing fish. Didymos fish that is... And I was like 'I am the sashimi queen baby!!'... Then talk went onto BBQ chicken.. I know I know, Pfau isnt a chicken but some affectionately call them chooks... and well, Henny Penny is a chook too. So here is Penelope - all BBQ'd up for R :P.

There is this amazing gal - she is working so hard, has a dream and passion and drive. I love this in a woman - it is not only inspirational but completely humbling to be given access to witness her journey.

My wonderful friend Kathy, has donated an Earthy Rainbow - and I the rest of the materials and my time. We want to help our friend reach the stars. The title of this post is telling - those of you who know her will understand.

So, the carrier is customisable and will feature Earthy Rainbow and Bamboo Denim. I just dont know if there is a dreamier combination. Period.

I really hope we can get her loom for her, please help us make her dreams come true!

Oraya is on her way to WA - she was a marathon effort, but finished just in time to make the courier! I am so excited - she is going on holiday overseas this week, hence me racing to get her finished!

There is a very special mama, who does so much on her own. Her boys are loved, cherished - doted upon. She is so positive, attentive and it is obvious that her boys are the centre of her universe.

She is a great example of what happiness is, when you allow it to just be.

Asheli is made just for her, so she can snuggle that beautiful baby and her toddler (or any of her boys for that matter!) in what every kid needs. A rainbow of course!

This is not for the faint of heart. Psychedelia is rife here, and I LOVE the bamboo denim straps and waistband. No I wont say it again.

The industry that I am a part of is such a warm and friendly place. On the large part we are supportive and encouraging, always mindful of the reason why we are all doing what we do. For caregivers to be as close to their babies as possible!

This carrier is Octavia - made from a Kokadi Melody wrap. Every single piece bar one triangle of wrap was used to create this Beetlebums Wing Strap Wrap Restyle (say that nine times, as fast as you can :P). I was nervous about it - the repeat of the pattern is a little difficult to work with, but I must say I am happy with how she turned out!

I played around with the appliqué and stitching on the headrest, I really wanted to create waves - like soundwaves, if you will.

I hope she is wrapped in her new carrier! She is on her way today to her new home <3. Thankyou E!!!

Love - for a very special duo

Well, this carrier was supposed to be a surprise.... but I missed her birthday and some!!!

I have been blessed with so much. There is a particular lady who has no idea how she blessed me. Her story and her journey is so inspirational, and I feel absolutely honoured that she has shared it . She doesn't know how she has changed my outlook, she doesn't know how she has changed my thoughts, challenged me, and made me look within to ask myself some big questions.

The answer to all of those questions of course was simply, 'Love'. It didn't matter what the question was - I finally understand.

Her little lady is growing up so fast, and she has lots of needs - her mama really hasn't been able to be spoiled in any other way but with love. So I made her Love to send her way, as a thank you for all she has done for me.

Thankyou K and little B - you are both astounding in your beauty. You guys know what life is all about.

Without further ado - here is Free Bird, a Full Buckle Baby Carrier with (wait for it) TWO base colours - purple and olive! So, the front panel and one strap is olive and the back of the carrier and opposing strap is purple! Radness!!

and the front panel has appliqué and hand driven stitches...

Industrial Sewing Machines 101 - Part 1

I just nearly fell off my chair!! Someone is saying that industrial sewing machines chew wraps?? That is one of the funniest things I have EVER read!!!! What do they hem wraps with?? What do they make the Hopp and Storch 1/2 buckles with? Time to dis-spell some 'myths' that are being created by mistake (Im sure).

It has to do with your needle. Any machine that has improper weight needles will chew through anything - chiffon OR denim! That is, of course, when we are talking domestics. That does come into play with industrials BUT you need to make sure that you (first and foremost) have a machine that suits your needs. Industrial machines are built with a specific application in mind and simply do not perform well in other applications. Its quite unfair to lump them all into the one category - just like domestic machines!

Also, Wrap fabric really IS only fabric. Yes, it is special, yes we love it, but in the grand scheme of things it is fabric and sewing machines are made to sew fabric.

Now, Vintage machines are in fact very nearly industrial - they fall into a domestic heavy category. I have a collection of vintage machines and yes I love them but for me I am a professional and I choose to use professional machines. If you ask just about anyone else in the industry what they use, you will find that they end up with industrials. Domestics just DO NOT HAVE THE POWER to sew through the layers I sew through.

Anyone worth their salt would investigate their options. Like anything, different sewing machines serve different purposes. My Juki is a dressmakers machine, designed to sew anything from chiffon to heavy denim. Which is classed as light to medium. Although we class canvas as heavy weight it really isnt in the 'industrial' world. Shade sails, tents, annexes are considered heavy weight and then there are even heavier applications that industrials cover. Machine models are made with a specific purpose in mind, and they serve that purpose extremely well but only that purpose, IYKWIM. Domestics are designed to fulfill many purposes but not all purposes proficiently.I love my Juki - it is so amazing. I am able to sew through many layers with complete ease, and it is 100% stress free. My stitches are perfect, and it has just made my life so much easier. And because my machine is ideal for MY purpose, it sews through wrap fabric beautifully and with complete ease.

It is such a shame when people say that any machine doesnt suit their needs. It means that they haven't had the right information to base their choice/opinions on. As I said, ALL industrial machines are built for a specific purpose, but it is incredibly hard to find information out there. There just isnt any. I was lucky and had the advice of three very experienced people (an ex seamstress who did piece work for years, and two mechanics, one that solely works on industrial sewing machines/bartack machines/buttonholers/bag closers/ etc you get the picture), and they led me in the right direction.

I absolutely research every option when considering a new machine to add to my collection. I LOVE SEWING MACHINES! I am well versed in vintage style cam machines, and sure they are lovely. I have three vintage cam machines of my own, one is a total pain in the ass, the other is amazing and in mint condition, and the third burnt its own motor out while being haunted by some poltergeist (it needed a bypass in the pedal to make it function in Australia). I have my heavy domestic Elna which is AMAZING (some peeps call the semi industrial but they arent), and she does all my decorative work (did I mention that I love her!?).

I just wanted to throw some of those well-meaning but uninformed ideas out the window :).

To Thailand!

Another of my beautiful friends is off to Thailand soon with her crew - her boy is quite big now and.. well... she needed a new carrier of course!!!

This is a reversible Half Buckle Beetlebum with a solarveil panel, it will be fabbo for the hot hot balmy heat over there. On Bamboo Denim - I have mentioned how much I love Bamboo Denim, haven't I??!

This is the 'Papa' side - and it suits her husband well :). They have been so busy with the year that has passed, so much has happened. They are such a beautiful family, always smiling and laughing. When we chat I love to hear the rough and tumble of the children playing freely in the background. Beyond perfect!

Apart from being incredibly jealous of their impending trip, I am excited for her to get her special fluffy. I just love my friends SEW much! Love you S!!!!

Zelle was made for a very special lady who has been stalking for years - I've known her for a long time, and know just how long she has wanted (ahem... NEEDED!) a Beetlebum Baby Carrier.

So I had to make her one :). I asked her for hints and ran with it!!

Zelle has a tuckable hood and peaked headrest, and is a standard size.

This fabric is similar to a favourite of mine - this is a Kimono Silk, and it is just divine. It has texture to it too - and the print is completely rockin', I must say!

Zelle is already flying on her way to snuggle her new mama and babe. I really hope the wait was worth it, I really really hope they love love love her :).

My darling friend sent me her Natural Mamas Girasol oh so long ago - and like all my friends, waited ever so patiently for me to make her carrier for her! This time I think it is rather lucky, because she gets a tuckable hood and head rest!!

Hand-driven and Mel designed applique to the headrest, the bird even has a love heart eye <3. The hearts have tails that meander across the headrest.

And the hood out, I just love this combo and I love how the Natural Mamas Girasol translates when restyled into a Beetlebums Full Buckle.

Some say patience is a virtue (it is...), some say better late than never (yep that too!) but I say that good things come to those who wait, and I am grateful for that <3.

This is the third carrier that will be available tonight - her name is Candice. There is a bit of a story behind it, she is a wonderful friend of mine, and she created 'Lotus' nappies (which are now a very famous brand of nappy - known by a different name!).

She is a Full Buckle Standard sized Beetlebum Baby Carrier with a headrest and tuckable hood.

I love the Tangerine canvas - so bright and poppy! The headrest features a hand-driven Mel designed (hey thats me!) appliqué of a Lotus and hand-driven straight stitches meandering over the headrest.

Here is Pedro - a baby sized Beetlebum Full Buckle, designed for newborns (in a 'froggy' position) up to around the 9m-1y mark. The body is narrower and shorter than a standard, with a curved padded headrest and attached sleephood.

Baby Sized Beetlebums have less padding in the shoulder straps and a lighter waistband. Having said that - all Beetlebums are designed to be worn for hours on end, and comfort for both the wearer and wearee is paramount. The Baby Size is a fantastic carrier for the teeny tiny baby Beetles.

And here is Rosa. I am in LOVE with this print. I have been hoarding it for awhile, and have quite a bit, and just cannot get sick of it. It is so bright, yet not garish and has such gorgeous tones throughout.

I just have to say right now - I have friends then I have my core friends - they have my back and I have theirs. One of my very best is just the most amazing woman alive. She is so calm, thoughtful, kind, real and generous to a fault. I only wish I could be half the mother she is, and half as tidy and organized!

I went to visit her in Brisbane last week (I think? Was it last week? Or the week before!?) and she handed over to me a bag FULL of wraps - she had collected them! Anyway, I happily took them of course :P. I asked her which one she wanted to Restyle for her and she said that she couldn't make up her mind...

Saltillo Wrap Restyle and Lucinda

I have mentioned before that I love Girasol Baby Wraps!! This Wrap Restyle is a Girasol Saltillo - a new design in the Girasol Standard line.

I love the colours, its a fab combo and I reckon Saltillo rocks a Beetlebums Restyle!

Saltillo features Beetlebums Wing Straps - long straps that you tie with just the right amount of padding. The outer edge of the strap 'wings it' over your shoulder when you want your strap to cup, or you can simply tuck it underneath for a more streamlined strap.

The waist is the standard straight three piece Beetlebum waistband.

And for the darker types - Lucinda. The fabrics are by the amazing Jane Sassaman and I love the combination. On black canvas, this is a standard sized Beetlebum.

I am gearing up for a large carrier stocking - I currently have five Full Buckle carriers ready, but I need more more more!!! The first I would like to show you is Shia - I think she is beautiful.

The feature panel is a gorgeous Japanese print with sakura flowers and cranes flying in the moonlight. The side panels are the amazing Mod Hearts (hopelessly out of print and hard to find *sigh*). Unless some miracle happens, this is the last of my purple Mod Hearts, so I had to make the carrier worthwhile for this occasion!

On one of the side panels I have appliqued a flower from the centre print, just to give Shia a little more specialness.

This is my new personal carrier - I made it last night :). It is a Wrap Restyle Full Buckle using an Easycare 01. Only the best, most retro rainbow out there! And look at the straps - I love how crazy they are!!

I am loving the brightness, it lifted my spirits after such a hard day.

Koko - The Fireworks Child

This carrier has a story, not a long one - but one that makes me smile at how cool it is!

I don't know how, but somehow I found out about a lady who really (like, really really) wanted a carrier - she had tried at every stocking for a long long time, and then gave up. I felt really sad - I felt touched that she had tried for so long, and just thought that there should be more joy in the world.. So I contacted her and said 'Hey, I will make you a carrier' and she said 'Yes' (ok, she said more than that but you get the gist.)

Fast forward, fabric selected, and today I decide to go for it - I was going to finish this carrier in amongst all else that was going on.

We chatted during the day, and she asked me what her carriers name was.. And instantly, I thought of fireworks.. But you cant call a baby carrier Fireworks, can you?? (Well, I did have a friend once long ago who wanted to call his first-born Stairwell... hmmm interesting hey? What a freakster!)

So, trusty Google comes to my aid, and I type in 'Fireworks, name, child' and a link comes up to something pretty amazing.

Take note of today's date. It is the 3rd of July.

Koko, a famous (and controversial) Gorilla was born on the 4th of July in 1971. She was named this as it translates to 'Fireworks Child'.

Tomorrow is Kokos birthday (although she isn't around any more) - and tomorrow is the day that Koko, the Beetlebum Baby Carrier - the Firework Child - flies off to her new home.

Oh I love how our universe works!

I really do hope that the family that receive Koko love and adore the moments that it gives them!!

So, Ive been asked a number of times to show them off - so thought I might do so right now :).

These straps are uber comfy, and uber-Beetlebum - they are my single fold wrap style strap with padding over the shoulder, with a retractable 'Wing' (hence the name) that can cup your shoulder when you want it to :). Nope, you wont find a strap anywhere like it!

Ive been making them for well over a year now, for friends and family - and of course the odd one on request.. They have had rave reviews and Im thrilled that the owners love them as much as I do!!!

Here is my little teeny 2mo Phoenix in Sarah's Mod Heart/Martin conversion - Phoenix is now a burly 18mo toddler!! I just go *squish* when I see his teeny baby pictures!!!

Inside Outs Stocking TONIGHT!

Well, I still love making these nappies so much - the Inside Out is a purely original nappy that I designed over three years ago now, and I am thrilled they are still loved so much. You wont find another nappy like it - its overlocked, frilly legs and turned and topstitched front and back make it aesthetically different to any other nappy - but there is purpose to the design. Of course!!!

These are some of the nappies I am stocking tonight - you will see alot more Inside Outs in the future - I love making them and feel inspired to make more, more, more!

Yes. My tongue is sore. Not because of the broken tooth that needs fixing (that my tongue just cant resist). No. From biting. My tongue. To stop having my say. As an A-typical Aries chick, it is hard, but I have had to to retain my self worth.

And I have stopped having my say.

With this post I give you away. I give away the power you had to hurt me. I give away the power you had over my emotions. I give away the power you once had to ruin my day, my week, my month. I give away the power you had over me, that I once cared about.

Today my feelings changed, and it is sad in one way but very joyous in so many others.

If you have to hide, then stay away. If you have something to say, then just say it. If you cant bear to, well... well dont then. And more so, if you cant say something nice then say nothing at all.

This post is rather ambiguous however I feel that many will understand. You might understand that I am just done with reading or hearing about what bored people have conjoured up about me. All I do is sew nappies. All I do is sew carriers. I dont DO anything else - apart from being a parent, which no doubt you are too. I put my heart into my work. And I love it.

So Im going to continue. There is nothing anyone can do to me to make me want to stop making beautiful things for beautiful families. What I am NOT going to do anymore is participate in the insane banter which is hurtful to me.

I do need to mention that I have been protected today by so many wonderful people. Where once I would have got a quick email/pm/message saying 'check *dumidiot* forum here', I got 'no, dont do it.' I love that.

So back to where I began. I dont say anything online, in conversation or whatever, unless I would say it to the persons face. And let me just say, I dont mind sharing my opinion. I much prefer to talk face to face in all honesty. It keeps people real. This isnt. This isnt real - people hiding behind their computers. Pretending they are people that they arent.

Anyway. I give it away. Well and truly. And it feels great.

And I took the pledge.

Not that I needed to, because my work is derived from within me.

A quick rundown -

Just grip the leading edge of your trifold with your long tongs and guide them right to the back of the pocket. Hold the boosted nappy by the back while you remove your tongs, pull the front of the nappy up and over the booster and ...

VOILÀ!

I just boosted over fifty nappies this way, it is so quick and easy!

If you find stuffing your trim Beetlebums a chore, you can feel that way NO MORE!

Gossamer Dreams - Eden!

If you live on Earth you would most likely know about the catastrophic floods we are currently experiencing in 2/3 of my glorious state, Queensland. For those who may not understand how big Queensland is, it has an area of 1,730,648 sq km. For those who dont do metric - 668,207 sq mi. It is a massive state and a lot of it is, or has been, under murky, muddy water.

I cant do much to help. All I can do is try to raise money, to help QLD Flood Relief. So all proceeds from my offerings tonight will be donated.

My first offering is a OOAK set, with a minky panelled FrillyBum Inside Out AI2 nappy, and matching appliqued Bonds brand organic tee.

And I got to collaborate with the always awesome Claire of Tigernaut Jeans!! We made a set from 'Scandinavian Trees'. Here is the minky panelled pocket nappy I made

I have made this baby sized carrier on black bamboo denim, with applique and hand driven decorative stitches on the straps :). There is also the 'snuggle seat' - an elasticised portion of the body, which envelops the baby and assures a good fit, even on little little ones!

See the roll below the headrest? It is the sleephood, all rolled up!

Woolly Nightpockets - revisited!

The Side Snapping Woolly Nightpocket has been in the works for some time...

There were some major hurdles to jump - stress points in snap zones, assuring that the Side Snap version can at least perform the same way as the front velcro closure...

I am thrilled to say that not only does it perform as well as the front closure WNPs but it outperforms it - the fit is exactly what the Beetlefolk are used to - trim, and reliable

Notice something a bit sweet about these??

YES! The love heart snap! I am using the heart snap to differentiate easily between the WNP and the up and coming, yet to be released, Woolly Day Pocket. There are of course many differences between the two, but on face value they look the same. That and I put sleep dust into those little love heart snaps, to help your babies sleep longer and more restfully ;).

I bought two, thinking I would chop one up and convert it, and keep the other as a wrap. Well, my little Phoenix isnt into wrapping any more, sadly. Oh well....

Hey folks! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Its been a wild ride this year, to say the least!

I finished a special carrier for a special cause today. It was auctioned and all of the proceeds are going to a dear family in need. Thankyou everyone for donating too, it is the very least we could do. I just love our community, it has given me faith in our 'village' culture!

Without further ado, I introduce to you Little Birdy.

Here she is with her hood up. I love this print so much, and it co-ordinates perfectly with the Teal denim.

100% hand driven appliqué - satin stitched on and then I followed the satin stitch with a triple straight stitch to make it POP!

Annnnnnd,,,,,.... PRINTED STRAPS! This print is a home decorating weight, so perfect to use on the straps! I only used the print for the top of the strap, I love the support the denim gives and didn't want to lose any of that goodness.

It felt so good making her, I loved the whole process. I hope Little Birdy loves her new home, and I hope her new family love her!!

Here is Purple Nightbird - a half buckle Beetlebum Baby Carrier in what has got to be one of my most popular prints! This carrier also has the cinching mechanism to allow legs out for smaller babies, sooner.

I appliquéd a bird on the left shoulder strap, and both straps feature the hand driven decorative stitching that is standard for Beetlebum Half Buckle Baby Carriers.

I cant wait for the mama to get this one, it was a joy to make and she is dead set - one of the most chilled mamas I've worked with (thank you for that!)

Yeah, a pesky little lonesome bobbin ... that came with Olive ...

How the heck am I supposed to sew with one bobbin? I just do not know! There is never one thread for a single project here, and Im far too 'Aries' to go winding a freaking bobbin each time I change my mind (which is OFTEN!).

So I've been on a search, trying to track down some authentic, 1954ish made bobbins, to fit my beauty. I really dont want to taint her with anything modern if I can help it. The only modern-ness I am will to put near her is the thread choose and the crafting I do!

Anyway, I have found a grand total of ZERO bobbins so far. Well, I did find one yesterday on E*ay and well, its gone now :(. Im about to search much more deeply, and am hoping that I can at least scrape up two or three (ideally ten) more... I feel this might take some time.

I havent actually started a project on Olive as yet - Im still gently unfreezing her. So that means, go slow!

Hmmmm.... slow, I don't do well at all.

Hmmm, what could be in this box?

Oh wow, they are delightful books - I wonder what they are for?

Oh! They are for my new (to me) Necchi Supernova Automatica!!

Ever since I bought 'Weekend Sewing' two years ago, I have lusted after Necchi sewing machines.

I started looking for one and of course, time went by and I don't know why... I gave up. Until two weeks ago, when my heart literally skipped a beat - this glorious machine was there, waiting for me to bid on her! Of course, I was going to win her come hell or high water - and I did. For a whole $46. Plus $65 shipping! Anyway, she is here now.

And her name is Olive.

And she is perfect, she purrs, she is fast, strong and capable. Exactly what I need!

For those rev heads out there - here is what is under her hood ;). All metal and now clean as a whistle. Ive oiled her up, and will be settling down now with a cuppa and her 56 year old manual. Its hard to believe that she was made in 1954! She is just like new.

Oh dear, some shenanigans took place here tonight... It is International Babywearing Week and I thought well.. I would not only wear babies but kids. ..

To lengthen the body of the carrier I wore it lower on my hips. When I wear Taj or Phoenix (the littler babies), I wear the waistband higher up on my waist - when I do this it creates a deeper seat and shortens the body somewhat.

Miss L and her Granny made this - Granny is an amazing artist by the way..! Not only that, Granny has this uncanny ability of just knowing what door needs to be unlocked to reach the inner core. I am so thankful for this!

I feel much intent and insight into this picture, and I love that Granny encouraged her to make this. Forever I will cherish it.

Ive got some girly nappies ready for the weekend. My camera is playing up.. so pictures to come :)

There are mainly pockets - Im doing different pocket openings too, so some have the sham opening (what you are used to with your current Beetlebums :)), and the letterbox opening. Listings will always say what style they are. I really needed to change it up a little, Ive been making these pockets for close on five years now!!

As you know, the Gossamer Dreams stocking is coming up fast! I have plans and will be working on a couple of things this weekend, including a freaky, monster carrier ;). Or two.... :P

Anyway, must sign off for today - Im going to chill out on the lounge - all the babies are asleep! Its a miracle!!

Desperate times for Babywearing in the US - Day 5

Oh boy, has the CPSC gone crazy or what? After the Inf*(^%& disaster (you can google it, I dont want to link to that company on my blog) they have decided that baby carriers are dangerous and they need to be wiped out. I really cannot understand, nor can I believe what I am reading - it just seems so wrong to me.

Now of course 99.9% of baby carriers are safe, they are built with utmost care and most manufacturers have high safety standards. There are methods that are commonly used to make safe carriers. There has been ONE really bad apple, and that bad apple has the potential to destroy an entire industry in the US.

I hope at the end of all this the Industry can hold that bad apple responsible.

For what it is worth, there have been no documented deaths related to baby carriers in Australia. Yet, devastatingly, there have been numerous related to strollers and prams. The same cant be said about the former in the US - unfortunately there have been deaths related to carriers and however upsetting it may be, there have been many many more related to strollers and prams. Yet those deaths only lead to higher safety standards for the prams that were involved. I dont understand why the same isnt being done for the Baby Carrier Industry. Now, Im not picking on prams nor am I looking for a debate, the fact is, that one usually replaces the other, so if you are wearing your baby - you arent needing a pram and vice versa. Its a fair comparison. A horrible yet fair comparison :(.

There is much information the The BabyWearer about this, you can try this link here. There is a Baby Carrier Industry Alliance, which is working REALLY hard to get US folks to contact their Senators, to get our side heard. The Baby Carrier Industry Alliance needs people to join, and they need donations - they need to build up funds to ensure that they can fight for OUR rights to choose to baby wear.

But it isnt happening in Australia is it? So why do I care? I care because my industry is global. Alot of what we do happens online, and as a direct result, I am affected by this craziness. I have friends who make carriers in the US, and many of us covet certain brands of US made carriers.

What is most dazzling about this whole thing is that the CPSC is not sharing their findings and bullying small carrier makers into submission. One big player has closed its doors because of this.

If you are in the U.S PLEASE join the Baby Carrier Industry Alliance - join The BabyWearer - be heard! More importantly, be informed! Don't just sit by and think that the powers that be (the CPSC) are going to 'Do right'. They are behaving irrationally and have broken many of their OWN guidelines! Don't let the CPSC do to baby wearing what our Government did to homebirth! STAND UP PEOPLE! WAKE UP PEOPLE! SAY 'NO MORE'!

Its just so infuriating!

I wrote the free tutorial for this bag a couple of years ago, and have since tweaked it somewhat. I didnt have any rings on hand when I made this one though - so I just knotted the straps together. Not *as* adjustable as the ringed version, but if I did a slipknot then yeah, I reckon it would be fine! Im going to update the BohoMama blog soon, to include the lining and the inner pockets.

And just because I can - my stunning youngest one. He is such a treasure, I get lost in his eyes!

My very own Mr T - dirty face and all. He is such a mischievous little pixie! I love his effervescent energy, and his adorable affectionate nature! My children have proven to me that our Attached ways are perfect for us.

And now for the eldest of my three, my pioneering Miss L. She is so amazing, perceptive and just ... real! I cant believe how much I love her, and you know what? She is sewing now too!

I love this print so much, it was one of the very first I fell for when I started venturing into making carriers.

Ive managed to collect quite a bit of this lovely retro mama, and have made this carrier for this months Gossamer Dreams stocking!

This carrier I have made for my mad sista in law :). She is quite the earthy worm and loves to snuggle with her little treehugger, Im really excited about her receiving this carrier! Her little guy has such an amazing story, we *heart* you lil Jasper!

I know, I have been quiet lately on the blogfront. I have still been making things - not as much as usual, but Im still around. I have also been focussing on my little ones, and you know, working through my own stuff.

The process of working through my own stuff has brought with it alot of learning for me. I have found so much through confronting what I feared most. And through that process I found that I could see so much more than before. Its like my eyes were opened - wider. I want to shrug that statement off with a curt 'whatever' but I just cant.

Anyway, Ive neglected you, blog. Sorry! I will blog much more often, I promise!!!

Gossamer Dreams is re-opening this month, we have managed to give the store a wee little facelift - all will be revealed in the days leading up to the 15th!!!

Here is my contribution - a baby sized full buckle baby carrier, with a headrest and cinchable body! I hand pieced the body, appliqued the mermaid and embellished the centre panel and headrest with hand guided machine stitches. Not to mention that the rest of the carrier is built with bamboo denim! DEEEEEELicious!

I hope you love her!

I have been honoured with the task of creating a special lil nappy for a collaboration with my friend Lesley of Cherubs Kiss, and the every wondrous and utmost perfectionist, Claire of Tigernaut. I'm serious, I was scared that I couldn't contribute anything on par with those ladies!

The auction has started, and you can find it on Lesleys store, Cherubs Kiss.

And if you have a Beetlebum Baby Carrier - or aim on getting one in the future, I have now got Wearing Instructions on my site. I did this mainly to cut down on the environmental impact (every little bit counts ;)) and the fact that my printer is well.... dumb. Ive got to thank my beautiful friend who modelled in the first pictures - her little guy also! And of course, thats me in the second lot of pictures, looking rounded as usual *eek*. Im starting Zumba this week - when Im fit and hot to trot then I will update those pictures LOL!

Ive also recently started a Facebook Page. I will update there when I am ready for stockings, am also thinking that if folks want to sell their Beetlebums second hand then they may link on the Page too - what do you think?

It was this day five years ago

It was this day five years ago that my life changed. Forever. One of those unchangeable unfathomable undeniable changes that often only happens once in a lifetime. I birthed my first child, and today marks the fifth year since that momentous day for me.

That day saved my life. That day gave me a family. That day made me change. That day changed everything - it was mammoth, and joyous, scary, actually if I want to be really honest it was terrifying. I could barely take care of myself yet here I am with a little tiny baby suckling happily on my breast. How could she trust me? I didnt know what to do! I was overwhelmed (and then add about a hundred well wishers... overwhelmed is an understatement!).

It was this day five years ago that my lil saviour, Lola, was born. I reflect upon the time we have shared together and am grateful for everything. She is a teacher - she teaches me continuously about life, love, honesty (hmmm we get alot of this!) and I respect her.

What a special special day, and what a special special little lady.

Happy birthday my sweet Lola. I love you!

Awwww look! I put my baby in a basket!!!

I have been plugging away as much as I can to get orders out, as it is, this week is the week they will all ship (nappies) - some have gone already, all remaining nappies are in progress.

I know Ive said it before but I just had no idea how hard it would be to actually get behind my machines and back into it. I have a renewed respect for all mothers, and have decided that I just will never ever judge another again. I am in awe of some of my friends, they seem to be able to maintain their family, homes and relationships so much better than I can manage right now.

Ive really loved this journey, and every single day is a treasure, Ive just decided that I need to be more conscious of living in the moment, and not dwell or ponder or overprocess thoughts. It is so much harder than I thought. What a big big year!

Anyway, sorry about that - how about another cute picture??

Hey look! A mama and daughter Beetlebum!!! These two were created for a wonderful wonderful friend of mine who has also been crazy patient. Of course the little one is for her beautiful daughter to tote her little babies around :).

And guess what? Monet and her baby are made with Bamboo Denim. Its divine, so soft and supportive, I am in love with the stuff! It makes for a more comfy carrier right from the beginning.

Now, I am working as hard as I can to get back up to date! I am feeling confident about getting up to date, if its the last thing I do!!

What a day! I would love to wish all of the mamas out there a massive heartfelt 'hoi!' on this day of spoiling for US! We rock! I am having a great day, Lola took me out for lunch (mmmm nachos and lemon and pepper calamari! Classy broads we are!) and we chatted about all sorts of things. It was pretty funny, alot of the convo went something like this -

Me - So, whats your favourite song right now?

Lola - *thinking deeply* I think 'In the Night Garden'

- Pause -

Lola - why did you ask that mummy?

Me - just for conversation.

Lola - oh, whats a conversation?

Repeat this about.... five times? Very industrious!

Anyway, I have finally gotten to two of my great friends carriers - now these girls have been waiting for ages (read:MONTHS) for their carriers. Its always the way with friends :(. I dont know why but I am just maybe a little too relaxed? Anyway, A and K - your specials are done :D

There are some more specials in the works for some special mamas - Ive just had to bite the bullet and get them done before their kiddos grew up and left home!

Hey folks - just a quickie :). Ive shipped all Mashups and the pre-orders are outta here either today or this weekend! So.... there will be more preorders up in a sec.

I have some other verrrry pressing projects that are well on their way to being finished too, so they will have to be completed before I start the next batch of preorders.

Some of the preorders will have a twist - they will be applique preorders - boy or girl. I will select the print and will applique the design on the back of your nappy for you! This is as close to a custom that you will get (and guess what, some will be for new customers only!) here at Beetlebums, they mess with my mind but if I can choose then Im ok with that! Y'all know, Ive got a nice fabric stash that is frequently drooled over and imitated :P.

I have a couple of Frillybums and a bit of special to complete, I hope to have them done too. I will announce their stocking here and on my FB group. If you havent followed yet then do it - you can find it here. I will preview piccies up here first of course!
